Heavitree Gap at Alice Springs is the type locality and source of the unit's name. Amadeus Basin. Up to 500m thick. Forms cuestas and strike ridges. Correlated with basal Redcliff Pound Group and Vaughan Springs Quartzite. Younger than an underlying migmatite (in the Arunta Complex) aged 1076 +/- 50 Ma (Marjoribanks and Black, 1974). Shallow-marine deposits. , Probably <1000 Ma (Wells, 1976). , Unconformably overlies Arunta Complex, Pollock Hills Formation and Mount Webb Granite. Is overlain conformably by Bitter Springs Formation, and unconformably by Angas Hills Beds. , Mostly white to pale pink or maroon, generally thin-bedded and cross-bedded, quartz arenite, sublithic arenite, and subordinate siltstone and greywacke. Arenites are mainly medium- to coarse-grained. Local near-basal grit and conglomerate lenses.

Maximum age constraint derived from the youngest units underlying the Heavitree Quartzite. Where not heavily silicified it forms the reservoir of the Gillen petroleum system.
